I started my business in Jan. 1983. At the time I wanted a second income to help out in case of a contract strike or wild cat strike at the coal mine. The gentleman that sold me the business gave me the name of the main Chimney Sweep in Belleville, IL. I started driving to Belleville and working with Hugh Maine in Jan 1983. I would work and leave in order to be at the mine by 3:00 pm. This continued until April.
In April I went to the National Chimney Sweep Convention in St. Louis, while there I attended workshops, and took the certification test. In August of 1984, I was getting ready to attend a school for poured cast in place chimney liners. I found out that it was a two-man job, enter my brother Kevin. Kevin was laid off from telephone construction and was glad to sign up. In 1987 we opened an office in Marion, IL.
The best decision I made was to attend a masonry school in 1988. This was a large part of the business. I learned to tear down and rebuild chimneys tuckpoint and repair masonry fireplaces. In the early 90's we began installing wood and gas stoves, fireplaces, and inserts. This still remains a large part of our business. We still annually clean and service these units. In 37 years we've been on just about every highway and back road in southern Illinois. We have been blessed to meet a ton of great people from all walks of life. This is the biggest thing I will miss. A lot of my customers I consider great friends. I have customers that were babies when I worked on their parent chimney or installed an appliance.
I love the feeling I get when we finish a difficult job. The job looks great, and the customer is well satisfied. I won't lie the work is hard, dirty, hot in the summer, and cold in the winter. If I was younger I would do all again in a heart, but that me
